SP Module Four - Assessing mains drainage in residential properties Although most surveyors are familiar with conventional drainage systems, the standards and regulations are changing. Sustainable urban drainage systems (known as SUDS) are the current vogue. As water authorities attempt to reduce the run off and improve water quality, they are increasingly prepared to prosecute home owners who contravene the rules. Whether it is a new washing machine connected to a surface water drain or an old septic tank that discharges untreated foul water into a local stream, property owners can face hefty fines and a considerable bill to put things right. Surveyors can be vulnerable if they do not warn of potential future problems. Consequently, it is a good time to review the general regulations and requirements to make sure we are up-to-date.
